Four Marks of the Church

craft2

The Church can be both seen on earth and felt in our hearts. This is why we call the Church the Mystical Body of Christ. The Church has four important qualities:

The Church is one. We have one Lord and we share one faith. We receive one life in the Holy Spirit.

The Church is holy. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are holy. In the sacraments, we receive all we need to make us holy.

The Church is catholic. Catholic means universal. Jesus told the apostles to teach all nations. The Church reaches out to all.

The Church is apostolic. Jesus founded the Church with the apostles. The pope and bishops continue their mission today.

The Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. These are the Marks of the Church.

Why We Pray to Mary

Lesson and sample story to tell kids on..

Why do we pray to Mary?

We pray to Mary because she is the Mother of Jesus. Jesus loves His mother very much, and Mama Mary loves Jesus very much as well. Jesus was a good son and He always listened to His mother when He was still a small child like you. When Jesus grew up, He helped many people. He healed many people from sickness; He taught them how to be good and how to do good things to one another. Jesus had a mission, and His mission was to save everyone from sin. And He has someone to help Him… His mother, Mama Mary.

And when we pray to Mama Mary, do you know what she does? She goes to Jesus, she talks and prays to Him as well. Mama Mary is also praying with you.

Here’s a story…

One sunny day, there was a kid named Paolo. Paolo had a friend and his name was Jeffrey. Jeffrey and Paolo were best friends. They would borrow toys from each other, play together, go to school together. They shared their baon with each other, and most of all they prayed together. Paolo and Jeffrey were like brothers.

“Dear God, please take care of Jeffrey and make him always happy and healthy so that we can play and do stuff together. Take care of him because he is my best friend in the whole world. Amen,” prayed Paolo.

Then Jeffrey prayed to God, “Dear Lord, Paolo is like a brother to me, he is kind and loving and he always lends me his toys. He is friendly. I also share with him my food when we’re in school and my other toys. Please take good care of him Lord. Amen.”

One day, Paolo got angry at Jeffrey, because Jeffrey lost Paolo’s favourite robot toy, Bumblebee. Paolo was very angry at Jeffrey. He didn’t want to talk to Jeffrey anymore. Jeffrey said sorry, but Paolo just went inside the house and closed the door. Jeffrey was left outside, so Jeffrey just went home. He was thinking of a way how to say sorry to Paolo.

The next day, Jeffrey had an idea. Jeffrey went out of his house, closed the door behind him as he ran and rushed towards Paolo’s house. When Jeffrey was in front of Paolo’s house, he saw Paolo’s mother.

Jeffrey took a deep breath and marched towards the garden and talked to Paolo’s mother.

“Hi ma’am,” said Jeffrey, “is Paolo home?” “Hello Jeffrey! Good morning,” replied Paolo’s mother, “Yes, Paolo is inside watching T.V. Why aren’t you two together playing this morning? Did you two have a fight?” asked Paolo’s mother.

Jeffrey was nervous but he said, “Yes, he got angry at me because I lost his favourite toy. Could you please talk to him and say that I’m really sorry? And that I want us to be friends again.”

“Why sure Jeffrey! I’ll talk to him this instant. Paolo always listens to what I say to him,” said Paolo’s mother. “You wait here for a moment,” added Paolo’s mother.

After a while, Paolo went out of the house with his mother. And Paolo went straight to Jeffrey and said, “I’m sorry too, Jeffrey. I know you didn’t do it on purpose. I was just angry because it was my favourite toy, but I’m not angry anymore because you’re my best friend in the whole world.”

Then Jeffrey thanked Paolo’s mother for talking to Paolo. Paolo and Jeffrey were friends again with each other and they were friends until they grew old.

Sacrament of Baptism

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. (Luke 3: 21)

Baptism of Jesus

Sacrament of Baptism

When we receive the Sacraments, we’re receiving GRACE from Jesus through priests that could be very broken. Behind the veil of what we can see, Jesus is actually doing it in the supernatural. He’s the one celebrating the Mass. He was the one who baptized you as a baby.

Deliver Your Gift

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. (1 Corinthians 12:7)

Gallery of Talents:

Showcase a list of talents that the kids can be good at (provide visuals of sample talents. Kids tend to be very visual). Sample of talents can be singing, dancing, writing, reading, socializing, praying, sports, making friends, etc.

The kids will pick 1 or 2 talents that they really like (as much as possible choose 1 talent only), they will be given a piece of paper with an image of their chosen talent.

After all kids have chosen their talents, they will pray and offer their talents to God. As an affirmation also that God has given them talents and they will nourish them for Him.

Dear God,
Thank You for making me good at __________.
I offer to You all that I do.
Please help me share my blessings with others.

Amen.

God Made Me

Discover Your Gift

Out of the generosity of Christ, each of us is given his own gift.  (Ephesians 4:7)

The Parable of the Talents

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

In this story each individual learned their own abilities/talents and they all use it to help one another.

Talent Booths

*You could make talent booths, with different kinds of talents where the kids could learn or showcase their talents.

Dance booth:

Tips on teaching: Show the students some simple video of kids dancing where they could copy their dance moves. Guide them in learning the dance step-by-step also!

Singing booth:

Tips on teaching: Teach how to sing with instrumental background; if possible try alternate singing – by verse, e.g first kid to sing first stanza then followed by next..and so on, then together during chorus. This is easier rather than teaching a new song that they will have to memorize. Select a popular song or a kids worship for them to sing.

Drawing/Coloring/Arts booth:

Materials could be anything: Blank white & colored papers, crayons, popsicle sticks, strings, stickers, glue, scissors, etc

Tips on teaching: Ask them to draw anything they love, give examples like house, trees, flowers, cars, sky, etc. encourage them to be more creative by using the other materials given to them; give examples like using popsicle sticks as house fences, etc.
